The Government has announced the provision of a one-off $750 Centrelink bonus in August 2025: a cash assistance measure to provide millions of low-income Australians a helping hand against the high cost of living. This payment will be given as a tax-free lump sum and is part of a wider initiative aimed at temporary relief from continuing inflation and economic hardship.
Who Will Receive the $750 Bonus
The $750 payment will be offered to eligible recipients of selected Centrelink payments. These payments may include JobSeeker, Youth Allowance, Austudy, Parenting Payment, Disability Support Pension, and Carer Payment, amongst others. Those receiving an Age Pension may be eligible for a $400 top-up; however, they are not expected to receive the $750 bonus unless they qualify for another eligible payment type.
Eligibility for this bonus carries with it the require- ment that the recipient be in receipt of a qualifying payment maintained by Centrelink as of the eligibility date (to be confirmed closer to the distribution period). Residency and income criteria must also be complied with under standard Centrelink rules for eligibility. No application for the payment will be required; Centrelink will make the payment automatically for those eligible.
Date and Method of Payment
The $750 Centrelink payment is to be given in mid to late August 2025, the exact dates depending upon the recipient’s normal payment date within the distribution period. The payment will be directly deposited into the bank accounts that Centrelink has on file for the recipients.
Recipients that have linked their Centrelink account to myGov should log in to check that their contact details and bank details are current so that payment is not held up. The bonus will not count as taxable income, nor will it affect ongoing Centrelink entitlements, making it a true financial boost rather than a temporary advance or loan.
What to Do Next
Recipients do not have to apply for this payment. However, it is best to stay informed by following announcements from Services Australia and regularly checking your myGov account for relevant updates concerning eligibility and payment confirmation.
